이 책은 영국 경마계의 조상이 된 전설적인 말 '샴'과 마구간 소년 아그바의 우정과 모험에 관한 이야기입니다.
18세기 모로코 술탄의 마구간에서 태어난 붉은 황금빛 말 ‘샴’의 발뒤꿈치에는 속도의 상징인 작은 흰색 반점이 있었지만, 가슴에는 불행의 상징이 있었습니다.
'샴'은 사막의 바람처럼 빠르게 달렸지만 잔인한 주인들을 만나 고난을 당합니다.
샴과 아그바의 모험은 사하라 사막을 거쳐 프랑스의 왕실로, 마지막으로 영국의 푸른 목초지와 웅장한 집으로 이어집니다. 

He was named "Sham" for the sun, this golden-red stallion born in the Sultan of Morocco's stone stables.
Upon his heel was a small white spot, the symbol of speed. But on his chest was the symbol of misfortune.
Although he was swift as the desert winds, Sham's pedigree would be scorned all his life by cruel masters and owners.

This is the classic story of Sham and his friend, the stable boy Agba. their adventures take them from the sands of the Sahara. to the royal courts of France, and finally to the green pastures and stately homes of England.
For Sham was the renowned Godolphin Arabian, whose blood flows through the veins of almost very superior thoroughbred. Sham's speed -- like his story -- has become legendary.
